Week… 1?

First Sunday of the month, and I have four full weeks now to achieve all of my goals.  I’ve only done 1.27 miles on the treadmill so far, and none of the strength training items.   I’ve also only written about 130 words.  *sigh*

I have, however, spent far too much money already – Nano merch, L4D2 pre-order, and the charge from my mechanics last month are all on the credit card right now.  I still have to pay for birthday gifts for my partner, and take him for dinner.

Goals for this week:

Writing:
1. 10K on Fae Story
2. Brainstorm core characters for Nano

Work:
1. 42 hours

Other:
1. 9 miles on treadmill
2. 1/4 of all strength goals
3. Organize apartment – finish flip of exercise equipment and office stuff.

October 1st – pre-nano

Happy first of the month!

I love the first day of a new month. Fresh starts, and all that. October is fantastic for many reasons: lead-up to Nanowrimo, my partner’s birthday, Canadian Thanksgiving, finally breaking out that fantastic winter wear!

This month I want to Nano before Nano – i.e. I have a story outlined and ready to go, I just need to write it now.  What better way to do it than as practice for next month?  :)

Tonight I’m having coffee with two of my NanoWomen.  I’m hoping to get the writing done then as it’s my best opportunity for it today.

The first of the month is a great day to set some goals.  I’ve got a few for this month:

Goals for October:

Read 5 books (Monster Island being the first).

Treadmill 35 miles by the end of the month
Do 600 crunches, 300 push-ups, 400 lunges per leg, 600 squats, 600 bicep curls.

Write 50K of Fae Story.
Prep 35 plot events for Zombie Apocalypse romance (Nano), create 5 characters.

Outlining is… more or less… done.

Outlining was accomplished rather quickly over the past weekend. So quickly as to make me think it is pretty well half-done rather than given the full thought that it probably deserved. I have fifteen scene sentences, in an order I happen to like.

I’ve read the next lesson, and am quite ready to start writing. But the actual writing does scare me a wee bit. I need to leap in, fully commited, determined to assign it all the time that it deserves.

I think the problem is the time commitment (and fear of failure!). I need to assign forty minutes in the morning to exercise, or else forty in the afternoon, and another forty-five minimum to writing, either in the morning or at night. And then, I think, maybe twenty minutes right before bed to read, and all the rest of my time is to be given over to work, and my partner and whoever else might lay claim to it.

That’s an exhausting and slightly scary prospect, but…. Time to leap in!

Pre-Plan Done! Now: Outlining

Last night was a highly successful coffee outting. I was at the coffee shop by 5:30, and the woman I was meeting didn’t make it until 7:15 so I had plenty of time to get the pre-planning finished. I worked through conflict, setting and time, race, and finished up with sentences identifying key points for four scenes that I’m looking forward to writing. I also came up with a new spin on the story that makes it a lot more satisfying for me to write – not that it wasn’t going to be a whole lot of fun in the first place, of course!

The next step will be outlining. I’m figuring on 70K words for this story, so roughly 35 scenes. I have 4 done already, and I’m going to aim for another 13, probably 5 earlier ones, 5 middle ones and 3 for towards the end of the manuscript. That’ll give me enough to hit goal-wise that I should stay on track through them.

I am not optimistic that I shall have much writing time this weekend. I am going to try to get some in tonight, but I fear I might give in to the desire for a nap. Otherwise, I will be out and about Saturday and Sunday both. I think I will try to keep the story in mind and mull over it during some of the opportunities I’m sure to have – including at least six hours of driving total amongst the two days. I also should think forward to what I would like to get done next week.

Character Pre-Plan done!

Huzzah!  I finished all four characters for my character module pre-plan.  Next up is the conflict module. I need to let myself really give it a shot.  Give myself situations that I don’t already see a resolution to so that *I’m* not bored by the conflict in my story.

I tested the muffin recipe and I think it was a winner with one small issue – the flax is supposed to be sprinkled on top of the muffin mix before it cooks, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it really cooks into the muffin. I found a lot of it flaking off. This is a problem when one wants to freeze the muffins as you end up with no flax on them by the time they’re thawed and ready to eat (or so I suppose, given that so much flax came off as I was putting them into the baggies).  Still, I have six muffins in the freezer for myself, and four out, and another four or so for Chris, plus another four out.  We’re set for muffins for a bit.  I think that I made 40 muffins total, and it cost me about $5 for the blueberries and $2 for the buttermilk – so factoring in the other ingredients, I would guestimate the cost of the muffins at approximately 25 cents a piece.

Tonight is NanoCoffee, which I’m looking forward to as I have already printed off a workbook to toy with and I’d also like to get some conflict planning done.  Hopefully a productive evening!

I want to get a copy of Scribblenauts – it’s the next game on my list to test out.  I do need to find time to play more of the ones I already own… but… so…tempting.

Mid-Week Update

I’m not quite at the midpoint of the week so far, but I’ve made some good progress already.

I’ve got a good sketch for my antagonist, and my potential love interest is starting to shape up. I’m having a hard time giving him too many layers, but we’ll get there. I don’t want anyone to be too black and white.  I need to work out a rough sketch of at least one other person – another female student who will be a mini-villain for the book.

The story itself is taking form as well. I can see bits and pieces of it, and I have a sense of the general story arc.  Sub-plots are still foggy, but I’ll get there.

I’ve signed up for three workshops with MUSE this year – or at least, I think I have. The deadline in the agenda for registration is the 20th, but based on the emails sent out by the organizer, it sounds like she wanted people to register earlier. Worst case, she tells me it’s too late. It’s my first year, and I’m not sure what to expect other than that it will be a lot of work Oct 12-18.

The 12th is Canadian Thanksgiving, so that’ll give me maybe that day to get a leg up on the whole thing.

I’m going to take a workshop with an author whose blog I read.  She’s blogged about the conference in the past. It should be interesting to interact with her in this context.

That’s all that I’ve accomplished writing-wise this week.

Otherwise, DDO is awesome and I’m loving the depth to the dungeons. It’s definitely sucking up quite a bit of time – for better or worse.  I’m really happy to be spending that time gaming with my partner.  :)

I’ve got a new recipe for muffins that I’m really excited to try out tonight. I’m becoming quite a baking fiend.  I think I need to get back into the rhythm of cooking real meals as well. I bought the most recent issue of Real Simple and it comes with 20 different dinners to try out over the course of a month.  I won’t use them all, but I’d like to try most of them, I think.

My partner and I are really keen to set up our own review website. We’d post up our thoughts on the various cultural items that we cross paths with – primarily books, television, video games and movies, not necessarily in that order.  We’ve talked about it a lot, but not really done anything to make it happen. I think that’s an important to do to add to my list.

General To Dos:

Turn office into exercise space
Turn library into joint office-library
Set up exercise schedule – something to ease myself back into a routine
Finish reading Vampire Academy 4
Read Orthodoxy for Book Club
Identify an approach for the review website

Returning to the Fold

I’m back!

I’m starting to think about what I want to write for Nano this year, and also outlining a Fae Princess story. It makes me happy.  :)

I’m trying to find a balance between work, play, writing, reading, television, my health, friends and family.  This is not easy, and there aren’t enough hours in the day to do all of it, all the time.  Writing has definitely been taking a back seat, but it’s so good for my mental health that I’m determined to get back into it.

Writing To Dos for this week:
Decide if I want to participate in MUSE online this year
Finish sketching out my antagonist, love interest and one extra character for the Fae book
Read the next HTTS module
Determine what I want to go with for my Nano story this year and start outlining
Have Nano-Coffee on Thursday!

(Vampire) Romance is in the air!

My December fic is proceeding nicely. I’ve passed the 10K mark, about which I am ecstatic. Writing has, so far, remained an important part of my month.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to my time in January when I’m taking so many classes again in addition to working, but I think I’ll manage. I like to be busy, it helps me focus!

I’ve also re-discovered the comment feature in Word, which I’ve been using frequently to identify sections of the manuscript that I know are weak from the outset.

Exploiting Cliches

My poor VR is drifting aimlessly. This is why plot outlines are so important! I need to ground myself with a few plot points that I want to hit over the next 50K. I’ll be happy if this draft comes in at 55K. It’s already in desperate need of re-writes to create more tension and conflict. Boo.

Highly annoyed by the appearence of several cliched characters already. Need to bring more depth to this thing! Yes, that’s right. Depth in my vampire romance.

Hitting a Post Nano Groove

I think I’m finally starting to get there – a post nano groove.  I definitely need to get myself over to a coffee shop with my laptop though as I’m missing that aspect of writing during November.

I’ve hit 3K with my VR.  I’d hoped to get in 10K before next Monday, but I’m doubting that will happen.  I’m going to guess another 1K tonight, 2K tomorrow and that would mean having to push through 4K on Sunday.  Not in this lifetime, I suspect.  Again, one never knows for sure, but… yeah.   I’m just pleased that I’m actually getting some more  writing done.

So on with the VR.  And time to start thinking about how to edit my Nano story.  I want to do an overall read and grab plot points I like next week.  Then time to start breaking down characters and index carding my scenes for the rewrite.
